State of the Union Address
The US President presents his annual State of the Union Address to the Congress. This year, President Obama picked the day of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday for this special speech. According to the White House press secretary, the 2013 Presidential speech is an opportunity for Barack Obama to outline his proposal for immigration reform. According to Article II, Sector 3 of the US Constitution, the President “shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient”. The address has become one of the main forms of communication between the President and US citizens [NOTE: We are LIVING SOULS, LIVING MEN, LIVING WOMEN. WE’RE NOT CITIZENS.] Since the invention of radio and television, the speech has been broadcast live on most networks in the country. The first of the regular messages to the Congress was delivered by George Washington on January 8, 1790. For years, the speech was called the President’s Annual Message to Congress, but its name changed officially in 1947. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first to use the current name in 1934.
